The American Lung Association® of Minnesota
is dedicated to helping hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans affected by lung disease.
Every year, over 340,000 people fall victim to lung disease as it qualifies
as the #3 killer of Americans. One in every seven people suffers from COPD,
Lung Cancer, Asthma, and Tobacco related complications. Following is information
to help you understand what is affecting so many people and why the American Lung
Association® is so dedicated to finding a cure.
Asthma
Over 17 million Americans are affected by chronic asthma. Asthma can be defined
as stress or obstruction to normal breathing habits such as wheezing, shortness
of breath or a tightening in your chest. The ALAMN offers fun programs for
people to learn to manage and better control their asthma so that it will no
longer be a controlling factor in their life.
COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases or COPD are irreversible diseases,
which obstruct the airflow to the lungs. Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis,
the two most common, cause the death of over 120,000 Americans per year.
Tobacco
Smoking is the leading cause of death in America. Tobacco is responsible for
more deaths than automobile accidents, homicide, suicide, alcohol and AIDS
combined. What’s more is that smoking is just as preventable. Contributions
to the ALAMN will support quit programs that help people stop smoking.
